Men’s soccer team takes active role in the community

Trinity Men's Soccer team partnered with the City of Everett, planting flowers downtown.Trinity Lutheran College has a different kind of athletics program. Since the first members of the men’s soccer team arrived in February, they have shown far more than athletic ability to fellow students and community members. The team has played impressively, winning all 15 of its spring soccer games, but even more impressive has been their volunteer involvement throughout Snohomish County. Team members have conducted kids soccer clinics at the Everett Boys & Girls Club and have served as YMCA youth mentors. On May 7, the team partnered with City of Everett staff by planting flowers downtown, helping to beautify the city they now call home. The volunteer project was part of the county’s Adopt-a-Park program – and the fruits of their work can be seen on the corner of Hewitt and Broadway, across from Comcast Arena.

The Trinity Eagles soccer team has also made faith an important part of their team’s compass. On Good Friday, Coach AJ Kurtz led his players in discussion about the spirit of the Easter season and how its message of sacrifice and love should guide athletes in serving others on and off the field. Trinity athletes have shown that they aim not only to win, but to serve as a light to the world around them – especially in the Everett community.

The squad starts its inaugural season of competition in August against area programs like Western Washington University, Pacific Lutheran University, and Simon Fraser University. But, before training camp begins, players will again volunteer outdoors by helping with trail maintenance for the U.S. Forest Service. As student athletes build the foundation for their future by pursuing an education at Trinity, they are actively becoming the change they want to see in the world.

Rev. Charlie MaysCelebration of Service recognizes Trinity’s legacy
of service

Event honors Charlie Mays,
raises $40,000 for student scholarships

The first-ever Celebration of Service event was held April 18 in Trinity’s Campus Center. The event, intended to be an annual gala, celebrated Trinity’s legacy of service in the community and, through its alumni, around the world. About 100 people attended.

The event included the inauguration of the Kairos Award, given to an individual with a lifetime of exemplary service, and the Alumni Service Award, for a Trinity graduate who exemplifies the college’s mission through his/her commitment to service. The event also recognized Trinity’s growing relationship with the Everett and Snohomish County community and concluded with an opportunity to financially support the college.

The Kairos Award was given posthumously to the Rev. Charlie Mays, who was recognized for his years of service as a parish pastor, synodical leader, and community activist with a commitment to social justice and community service. Mays also served as chair of Trinity’s Board of Directors prior to his death in 2009. A video documenting Mays’ life was presented, with narrations from colleagues and friends, including the Rev. Jim Rismiller, who presented the award to May’s wife, Sandy.

Jan Kersgaard, recipient of the Alumni Service Award with Beth Elness-Hanson, Director of Alumni RelationsJan Kersgaard was honored with the Alumni Service Award. She attended LBI in 1974-75 for biblical studies and missiology, then used her previous education in nursing and midwifery as a missionary in Asia for 32 years.  The award included a $500 gift to support a maternal health center she helped develop.

To recognize the college’s growing relationship with the community, Stacy Kitahata, Professor & Chair of Intercultural Studies, introduced Pam Van Swearingen, a local attorney and community leader who has worked to develop a human rights ordinance for Snohomish County. A number of Trinity staff and students have become involved in this effort. Kitahata noted this emerging partnership as one example of Trinity’s desire to be engaged in the community.

The event concluded with an opportunity for guests to financially support the college’s scholarship fund, including gifts to establish the Charlie Mays Endowed Scholarship. Nearly $40,000 was raised or pledged at the event.
